Up and Coming Apollo Bay Surfers learn from the best!

(Apollo Bay, VIC – Wednesday February 8, 2012): The VicRoads Surf with the Boys Tour Presented by Play it Safe by the Water, Metricon and Global Surf Industries hit the waves today in Apollo Bay for the 4th stop on the state wide tour.

A joint initiative between Surfing Victoria, VicRoads and Play it Safe by the Water, the program aims to develop male surfer’s water skills and knowledge of road safety.

Light winds and the left over’s from a recent large swell gave the participants plenty of chances to show their stuff in the water to professional surfer, Adam Robertson, whilst learning about water safety and road safety.

Robertson was stoked with the level of surfing the boys were showing.

“This is the fourth year we have come to Apollo Bay, and every time the kids are getting better.

The program is really great for young boys to understand that there is an element of risk involved in surfing as well as driving on the roads. We are trying to show them how to reduce that risk whilst having heaps of fun”

Each participant receives a surf lesson, water safety talk including how to perform a basic board rescue, and a heap of giveaways.

The tour now heads to 13th Beach on Thursday.

The VicRoads Surf with the Boys Tour is driven by the new Ford Territory.

About the Program:

VicRoads Surf with the Boys Tour presented by Play it Safe by the Water, Metricon & Global Surf Industries is a program aimed at young male surfers who have passed through the learn to surf stage and have their own equipment, i.e. surfboard and wetsuit.

Surf with the Boys Tour is FREE and just above an introductory learn to surf class. All participants are expected to be able to swim 200 meters and have the basic surfing skills of being able to catch and ride an unbroken wave.

It is a skill development program that aims to help male surfers become more competent in the open ocean environment and has as its goal the aim to help young surfers develop strategies that will help them be safe in the open ocean environment and become better surfers.

About VicRoads:

VicRoads purpose is to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to communities throughout Victoria by managing the Victorian arterial road network and its use as an integral part of the overall transport system.

Vic Roads is aiming to get across 4 key messages through the program.

-       Make sure you get your 120 hours of practise driving when you are learning to drive. Experience makes you a better and safer driver.

-       Don’t text or talk on your mobile when you’re driving.

-       Assess the road conditions just as you would when you want to go for a surf and drive within the limitations of your experience as well as current conditions on the road.

-       Respect on the road is important, just like respecting the ocean and your mates.
