Hazza Mann through to the Quarters! Tahiti – BLOG
Hey Everyone…
Todd Rosewall, Mitch Baker and myself, made our way to an island just off Tahiti called Rangiroa. When we first arrived we didn’t have our board bags because they were still on the main island with nearly everyone else in the contest. We decided to and check the wave anyway, when we rolled we just saw 4-5 foot waves barrelling off their heads and we were spewing that we didn’t have our boards. The next morning our boards arrived and we were frothing! We all surfed for about 3 hours and everyone was getting sick barrels, we all were so excited to surf in our heats seeing that it was just you and three others in perfect waves.
When we arrived at the comp on the first day the waves looked super fun but it was super shallow and scary to pull-in seeing that you could easily hit the bottom, the contest director decided to put the contest on hold for a few hours and wait for the tide to come in a bit. It was a good call and there were super good waves for the opening day, me and Mitch both got through our opening round heats, I surfed my second round heat that day as well, in amazing conditions and managed to score a 9.00 ride for a good tube ride and back up of a 6.5.
Today the surf was pretty similar. First up was Mitch, Mitch had a super hard heat and not the best conditions because the tide was still pretty low, he surfed very well but came third in a close heat. Todd was next in the water in one of the later heats of the round; Todd surfed very well and got some good barrels he ended winning the heat.
Me and Todd were now in the round of 16, we both knew our heats were going to be really hard because there were only 16 of the best surfers left. My heat was first up I got one good barrel at the start and one wave were I did a few turns I was sitting in the lead, I made a few silly mistakes by not coming out of a few good barrels and Garret got two bombs and scored big! So I was sitting in second place with 5 minutes remaining and knew the other two boys could easily get the score but the ocean slowed up and i ended getting through. Todd was in the heat after me, Todd surfed good and got one really good barrel which everyone on the beach was cheering and clapping for, unfortunately the judges didn’t see it in the same wave and gave him an average score, Todd ended up getting knocked out but still came out of this contest with a good result
The comp will finish Tomorrow and I’ll be first in the water in my quarter final heat against James Woods. Can’t wait yew
