COOLANGATTA/QLD (Wednesday, 9th May): The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Telstra is back for another year to expose Australia’s top junior surfing talent.

Since its birth in 1999, GromSearch is regarded as a ‘rite of passage’ junior surfing series for kids looking to further develop their surfing careers.

GromSearch provides its participants with a countrywide ratings system, at least two surfs and will be hitting the shores of four states across Australia, starting in Cronulla, NSW on September 29th.

The hotly contested Jan Juc event is scheduled to run October 4-6. Phillip Island’s Joe van Dijk was a dominant performer at Jan Juc in 2011, winning the U/16 division and backing up with a second place in the U/14′s.
“Rip Curl is pleased to be continuing their support of the GromSearch series,” said Rip Curl Team, Events and Partnerships Manager Mark Flanagan.

“GromSearch is a big part of junior development in Australia and culminates with a national final and a pathway to the international final at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. We’re stoked to be continuing our support of the most important surfers – the grommets.”

The popular series will include the 16 and under boys, 16 and under girls, 14 and under boys, 14 and under girls, 12 and under boys and 12 and under girls divisions.

In keeping with the fun and progressive nature of the series, GromSearch will include the expression sessions as well as the standard competition, which will ensure surfers can stay involved in the event right up to the final siren.

Hundreds of 16 and under aged surfers from beaches around the country will be looking for bragging rights at their local and interstate events with the male and female winners (16 and under boys and girls division) of each event receiving an invite to the national final held on the final day of the Queensland event in December.

The winners of the national final will represent Australia at the International GromSearch final held during the 2013 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach.

So what are you waiting for? Entry is easy and available now, so get involved in all the fun, games and competition of the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch series and who knows, you may join the prestigious list of past winners which includes Nikki van Dijk, Stephanie Gilmore, Jordy Smith, Ben Dunn, Matt Wilkinson, Owen Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons and Laura Enever.

2012 RIP CURL GROMSEARCH PRESENTED BY TELSTRA SERIES DATES:
Event 1: 29 September – 2 October, 2012 – Cronulla, NSW
Event 2: 4 – 6 October, 2012 – Jan Juc, VIC
Event 3: 20 – 21 October, 2012 – Trigg, WA
Event 4: 15 – 18 December, 2012 – Sunshine Coast, QLD

Please visit the Surfing Australia website www.surfingaustralia.com for online entry and updated information on the series.

The Rip Curl GromSearch series is presented by Telstra, with support from Air Asia and Surfing Australia.

(Point Impossible, VIC – Sunday April 29, 2012): Adam Lynch (Highton) and Molly Powell (Anglesea) have both taken out their inaugural Victorian Longboard Titles in solid conditions at Point Impossible this weekend.

With both rounds of the series being run on the one weekend due to the postponement of the first round, surfers were treated to perfect waves on Saturday with a large swell filling in on Sunday.

Lynch flew under the radar the whole event, posting moderate scores along with the occasional excellent wave. However it was his consistency that saw him take second in both events and eventually take out the title.

Lynch was ecstatic with his first state title.

“I got a state title when I was 16 in the Cadets division but its good to get an open win.”

“I grew up surfing “Possos” (Point Impossible) so its great to win out here”

“This isn’t what Point Impossible is usually like, its pretty big out there”

Curry was in the in form surfer on the Sunday taking out the second round with powerful turns in the big surf. In the final Curry posted a huge total of16.56 (out of a possible 20) to take down his opponents Adam Lynch, Will Cousins (Torquay) and Tas Dunton (Mornington Peninsula).

Curry enjoyed the bigger surf for the competition.

“It was trying conditions out there today, far from the usual longboard comps”

“Still good waves when you got them though. Thanks to Patigonia and Island surfboards for the gear, which held up great in the waves.

Molly Powell, who has been traveling the country competing, was stoked to get a win on home ground.

Powell took down friend Sam Suendermann (Anglesea) in both rounds posting solid scores of 14.67 and 12.50 (out of a possible 20) in her two finals respectively.

“The waves were epic out there its good to win in such good waves”

“I can’t wait for the Aussie Titles now, they are always great fun!”

Other finalists on the day included Greg Brown (Jan Juc), Ben Considine (Barwon Heads), Phil Trigger (Mornington Peninsula) and Kane Tankard (Mornington Peninsula).

Full results can be found on the Surfing Vic website.

(Torquay, VIC – Monday April 23, 2012): The Victorian Longboard Titles Presented by VB will resume this coming weekend at Point Impossible after the last round was forced to postpone due to poor surf and weather.

Both the first and second round will be run over the weekend with both results counting toward ratings for the Victorian Longboard Team which will head to the National Titles later in the year.

Competing for the sought after spots will be last year’s winner Sam Dunton (Mornington Peninsula) and his brother Tasman. Both are highly regarded in the longboard community and will be both looking to post solid results at Point Impossible.

However the dark horse for the event will be Apollo Bay’s Oscar Lalor. Lalor posted a semi-final finish at Point impossible 2 years ago and made the final last year.

The Open Women’s division will once again be hotly contested between friends Molly Powell (Anglesea) and Sam Suendermann (Anglesea). Both of the girls have had some great results already this year, competing in Australia and New Zealand in the ASP Longboard Qualifying Series.

Other divisions to be run will be Under 16 and 18 Boys up to Over 60 Men’s and Over 35 Women.

The forecast for the weekend is calling for a solid swell filling in over on Saturday with the potential for great waves over the whole weekend.

The Victorian Longboard Titles Presented by VB is a two part series, which determines the Victorian State team for the Australian Longboard Titles later in the year.

Byron Bay had turned on paradise mode, the sun was shining and the vibes were good for the last day of Volcom’s VQS National Finals at The Wreck. The crew at The Stone had pinball machines, space invaders, spa bath and a fairy floss machine for all the kids to enjoy … and most importantly the pulse of 5-6 foot swell and light offshore winds served up a feast of barrels for the four divisions of competitors.

The Girls surfed amazing through the event and again some very tough conditions, but in the end it was Zoe Clarke from Victoria, who surfed amazing in the final to claim the VQS champs girls title ahead of Queesland’s Brittani Nicholl.

Zoe gets a clip in the highlights video below at the 1.31 mark.

Sydney NSW/AUS (Tuesday, April 17, 2012) – This morning the world renowned Sydney Harbour played host to the official launch of the 2012 Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic. Seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion, Layne Beachley welcomed the surfers and media to the seventh annual Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic, the event that offers the richest prize purse on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, with USD$130,000 on the line.

Nikki Van Dijk (USA), 17, has been awarded the event wildcard for the second year in a row. Van Dijk finished equal 5th at last year’s Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic after an impressive run to the Quarterfinals.

Van Dijk chose not to attend the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, opting for the experience of competing against the world’s best surfers.

“I want to do as well, if not better than I did last year,” Van Dijk said. “It’s great to be here with these girls because they’re the best in the world. I’m only 17-years-old so this is the best experience I can get. Hopefully we will get some good waves at Dee Why. ”

Stop No. 4 of 7 on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic is the halfway mark on this year’s tour. Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and current ASP Women’s World No. 1, has built up an intimidating lead on the ratings after two wins and a runner-up finish from the first three events.

“Last year was one of the most valuable years of my entire life,” Gilmore said. “I learnt that you can overcome things and comeback stronger. Last year my heart wasn’t in it 100%. I was focusing on different things. This year I’m loving being on tour, I love surfing with all the girls. We’re all pushing each other to new heights and I think women’s surfing is in a really good place.”

Layne Beachley is proud to host the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in her hometown of Sydney, and is looking forward to a promising surf forecast.

“The surf is looking good for Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” Beachley said. “It’s looking like we might have six foot waves at Dee Why point again this year, but mother nature is in charge and we will see what happens. It will be some of the most challenging waves the girls will face all year and I’m looking forward to seeing them out there.”

Carissa Moore (HAW), 19, reigning ASP Women’s World Champion, is excited to be to be back in Sydney and defend her title as defending Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic event champion.

“It’s great to be here in Sydney,” Moore said. “It’s a beautiful city and I love coming here. I think that coming into the season as defending ASP Women’s World Champion is definitely different than chasing after a world title. Each year is a clean slate and I’m having as much fun as always.”

Laura Evever (AUS), 20, current ASP Women’s World No. 5 and Northern Beaches local will be looking to post a good result in her hometown event.

“It’s my second year on the ASP Women’s World Tour,” Enever said. “I’m training harder and putting more into it. I’m still myself and having fun, but I’m focusing more on improving my surfing. It feels good to be at home. I think it’s an advantage having my friends and family by my side and backing me.”
